These stools were made for an exhibition at Borough Market in London. Food With Thought was organised by Lorraine Statham and June Swindell, they pulled together a group of designer friends to create an exhibition loosely based around the theme of food. My local grocers happens to be called Tutti Frutti – and they were really happy to keep nice undamaged fruit crates for me.
Mostly these small crates are made of poplar. Its a very low grade wood and it’s mostly pulped for paper.
The Hoogstraten strawberry stool was made by first steaming the strips over a big pan of boiling water just to make them flexible enough to weave.
I used parquetry to turn something so disposable into something with greater value – a bit of a fiddle but I like the graphic result.
When Joseph and Jude came to visit in the summer we made one together.
